During the school year this PTO committee developed, with the Hinsdale Central library staff, two events for the school. The first event was celebrating reading, around Dr. Seuss' March birthday, in connection with Read Across America -- an annual national reading motivation and awareness program. The PTO committee, along with the Central library staff and the English department, provided treats and Dr. Seuss books to the students between student performances of "Seussical, the Musical".
Our second event was for National Library Week. This year's theme was "Join the Circle of Knowledge". The PTO committee partnered with the library staff to help host TWO events on the same day in April. This wonderful day began with a Teacher and Staff Appreciation Breakfast in the library, attended by over 300 people. In addition to enjoying breakfast with delicious food and beautiful flowers provided by the PTO, faculty and students participated in a day of gaming in the library. The event promoted teacher appreciation and student/faculty ownership of our library and its new technologies.
The PTO hopes to continue to interact with our Hinsdale Central library staff and teachers through events such as these which promote an appreciation of both reading and our great staff and teachers. David R. Lange, Hinsdale Central English and Reading Teacher, thanked the PTO:
"What a great event! Teachers were abuzz with appreciation for the elaborate breakfast. I think it was an excellent idea to combine the teacher breakfast with the “game day” for kids and, for the teachers, demonstrations of two new databases that the library is purchasing for next year. It was also great to see kids being so excited about being in the library! Another benefit which I saw was teachers and students were chatting ABOUT the games throughout the lunch periods: kids and teachers connecting about out-of-school interests is almost always a good idea. So, thank you for your huge efforts in finding sponsors and setting up and serving, etc.! I hope that this can be a yearly event."
